Leading From Our Wounds

Journeying through pain to purpose

a book study of "The Wounded Healer" by Henri Nouwen

Ministry begins, not in our strength, but in our shared humanity.

As pastors and ministry leaders, we are often called to care for others while quietly carrying our own unhealed wounds. Over time, those hidden hurts can begin to shape how we lead—sometimes without us even realizing it.

This 8-week book study offers a space of safety and reflection for pastors to engage Henri Nouwen’s timeless and transformative work, The Wounded Healer. Together, we’ll explore how our own experiences of pain can become sources of deep compassion and authentic connection in ministry.

Through thoughtful reading, guided conversation, and supportive small group interaction, we’ll learn how vulnerability—when rooted in healing—can deepen, not diminish, our pastoral presence. This journey isn’t about revealing your wounds to your congregation. It’s about finding purpose in your pain so you can be more fully present to others in theirs.

If you’re longing for a more grounded, honest, and grace-filled approach to leadership, this study is for you.

About The Book

“In our own woundedness, we can become a source of life for others.” – Henri Nouwen

In this short but deeply impactful book, Nouwen offers a radically fresh vision for how we care for others—not from a place of detachment or expertise, but from our shared human experience of pain, vulnerability, and healing. With pastoral wisdom and compassionate honesty, Nouwen challenges us to see our wounds not as weaknesses to hide but as pathways through which God's grace flows.

This book study is for anyone in ministry or service—pastors, caregivers, spiritual directors, or those walking alongside others in need—who longs for a more authentic, grace-filled approach to leadership and care. Together, we’ll reflect on key themes from the book, explore how they relate to our own lives and ministries, and encourage one another toward healing and hope.

Whether you’re carrying visible scars or quiet burdens, The Wounded Healer invites you to discover how God meets us in our brokenness—and how healing can begin there, not just for us, but for those we serve.
